Bendigo Galleries and Museums

Bendigo’s galleries and museums bring together goldfields history, living cultural practice, scientific curiosity and a strong tradition of making. Across the city, visitors can move from paintings and contemporary commissions to archival photographs, underground workings, tramway artefacts, Chinese heritage and hands-on experiments.

🎨 Art Galleries & Exhibition Spaces

Bendigo Art Gallery

Established in 1887, Bendigo Art Gallery holds more than 5,000 artworks. Its collection ranges from Australian art of the 1850s to the present, including Bendigo goldfields art, nineteenth-century European paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and First Nations works. The gallery is currently closed for a major building redevelopment, while its creative programme continues across Bendigo and selected collection works remain searchable online.

Djaa Djuwima

Djaa Djuwima is a permanent First Nations gallery on Dja Dja Wurrung Country. Its name means “show, share Country” in Dja Dja Wurrung language. The gallery provides a space for First Nations artists to explore identity, heritage and connection, with exhibitions curated by the Arts Officer First Nations and supported by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and Elders through the Wartaka group.

La Trobe Art Institute

La Trobe Art Institute is a contemporary art centre and custodian of La Trobe University’s art collections. Its Bendigo base presents curated exhibitions, residencies and public programmes, and connects visitors with seven university art collections. The FM Courtis Collection, founded at Bendigo Teachers College in 1958, comprises 324 works by prominent Australian artists. Works and artist commissions are also displayed at the Flora Hill campus.

Living Arts Space

At the front of Bendigo’s historic Post Office building, Living Arts Space presents work by artists from Bendigo and Central Victoria. Its changing exhibition programme is complemented by workshops and artist talks, offering a compact encounter with local creative practice in the Pall Mall precinct.

📜 Local History & Community Collections

History House Community Museum — Bendigo Historical Society

History House brings together local stories, objects and archival material cared for by the Bendigo Historical Society. Its collection comprises more than 40,000 items, including photographs, documents, books, journals, ledgers, maps, plans, textiles, clothing and artworks. The photographic record includes more than 2,000 images, many dating from before 1960. Collection and research enquiries are available on designated days, with appointments preferred for research assistance.

🏺 Historic Sites & Specialist Collections

Central Deborah Gold Mine

Central Deborah Gold Mine interprets Bendigo’s twentieth-century gold-mining story through underground guided tours, surface exploration and heritage buildings. Mining equipment and the workings help explain how 929 kilograms of gold were extracted from the mine. The Mine Experience descends 61 metres underground, while the surface provides a self-guided complement to the underground story. School excursions and group experiences are also available.

Bendigo Tramways Museum

At the depot and workshop, Bendigo Tramways Museum traces 130 years of tramway history and the city’s goldfields past. Artefacts and photographs from the collection, including material brought out of the vault for public display, show how trams served Bendigo as public transport before becoming part of its heritage experience.

Bendigo Joss House Temple

Opened in 1871, Bendigo Joss House Temple is a Chinese place of worship connected with Chinese migration to the Bendigo goldfields. Visitors can learn about the blended practices of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism and the temple’s dedication to Guan-Di. It remains a practising place of worship, and worshippers are welcome. The temple is generally open on weekends.

Bendigo Pottery

Bendigo Pottery combines local industrial history with contemporary making in a working pottery complex. Visitors can explore historic kilns, handmade Australian ceramics, a retail gallery, artist studios and an antiques and collectables centre. Its museum and heritage material provide context for the continuing craft activity on site, including opportunities for pottery decorating.

🔬 Science & Natural Learning

Discovery Science & Technology Centre

Discovery occupies Bendigo’s historic Railway Goods Shed and offers more than 100 interactive exhibits alongside daily science activities. The Bendigo Planetarium adds dome shows about the night sky, planets and galaxies, while the Vertical Slide turns gravity into a memorable physical experience. Education programmes combine exhibits, workshops and planetarium learning for school groups. Discovery opened in 1995 as Australia’s first regional science centre.
